Ed Williams, M.Ed.
Chief of Staff, Harvard Debate Council
Ed Williams is an internationally recognized educator, global debate education consultant, and instructional leader with more than 30 years of experience advancing critical thinking, communication, and student leadership through debate education. As Chief of Staff of the Harvard Debate Council, he provides strategic leadership for the organization’s international initiatives, working to expand access to world class debate education for students, teachers, and schools around the globe.
Ed’s work is driven by a simple but powerful belief: debate is far more than a competitive activity. It is one of the most effective tools for teaching students how to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate thoughtfully, and engage meaningfully with diverse perspectives. Through Debate Across the Curriculum, he partners with school leaders and educators to transform classrooms into dynamic spaces where curiosity, inquiry, and intellectual courage thrive.
Throughout his career, Ed has led teacher training programs, curriculum initiatives, and educational partnerships across India, China, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, the Dominican Republic, and the United States. His work focuses on helping schools develop sustainable and scalable models that integrate debate, public speaking, and argumentation into everyday teaching and learning. By empowering educators with practical and innovative instructional strategies, he helps students develop the skills necessary to succeed as scholars, leaders, and engaged global citizens.
A former Middle School and High School Principal, Ed brings a unique combination of instructional leadership, curriculum expertise, and classroom experience to his role at Harvard Debate Council. He has coached nationally competitive debate teams for more than three decades, served as a consultant and judge for the United States National Debate Team, and taught at leading academic debate programs hosted by Stanford University, Bates College, Dartmouth College, Emory University, and other premier institutions.
Ed holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He is among the youngest individuals ever inducted into the Barkley Forum Key Society, one of the highest honors in high school debate, and is a recipient of the Morehead Cain Impact Educator Award for his enduring commitment to educational excellence and student impact.
Through his work at Harvard Debate Council, Ed is helping to build a global community of thoughtful communicators, courageous leaders, and lifelong learners who are prepared to shape the future through dialogue, inquiry, and informed advocacy.
